I noticed one just the other day that goes back as far as Server 2012 at least, and possibly back to 2008 Server.

I was working with a virtual 2012 server when I idly decided to see if it was defragging its drives as it should. I soon found out that defragmentation had never been run on any of its drives. Why is this, I wondered? This server has been running for several years.

I ventured forth and checked the settings. I discovered that while it was in theory set to defrag all drives on a weekly basis, when I went to select the drives to defrag, none showed up in the resulting window. See graphic:

So, I thought I would check one of my 2019 servers. Surely this has been noticed and fixed by now, I thought. Think again! I found exactly the same bug. I don’t have Server 2008 or 2016 running at the moment, but I bet I’d find the same thing. For all the money they make, you’d think they could detail one coder to fix this bug. But, apparently not.

Fortunately, the defragger does see all the drives for the purpose of running it manually. I’ll give them that. But, it works properly in Windows 10 so I’m just mystified that it doesn’t work right in Server.

Lars’ Pages
Home

Microsoft seems to hate to fix their bugs.
